Yesterday I sat along this creek, Hat Creek, near Lassen National Park and I ate a Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich on white bread. It was a great dinner – although perhaps not what the nutritionist would have recommended for me,

Some younger family members were walking up the creek to fish. I just felt like sitting next to it. I have hiked many streams in my day to fish, but lately I sort of just enjoy the company of the snow melt water and a simple sandwich.
I guess there are hunters and there are gatherers. I am quite happy gathering. This summer we have donated many pounds of tree ripened fruit to the neighborhood “Free the Food” produce stand and also given to friends and family and friends of family. Our own freezer is full of cherries, plums, apricots and berries that we’ve harvested and are just waiting for us to get into the jam-making mood.
Bridget’s flower bouquets have also brought many smiles to faces as she has gifted many bouquets. She has also gifted many of her pottery pieces as visitors love her mugs, plates and bowls. There is a simplicity to all of this that is quite attractive to me especially when compared to the all consuming consumerism of our daily lives. I was in Costco today observing as people filled up their carts while either ignoring their fellow shoppers or frustrated that they are in their way. The clerks robotically slid the food and goods across the checkout scanner with no enthusiasm for people or place. I wanted to get out of there as quickly as possible.
Sometimes all you really need is a good PB&J sandwich and a nice little mountain stream. In fact, it might not get any better than that.

What a beautiful creek, and what a great way to enjoy it. The photos are really lovely, how nice that you guys are sharing your bounty with your community you look happy and at peace.

Hi Laura! I would like to get into a little photography this fall after the gardening slows down. Are you still in the Indianapolis area?… about to go out and pick some late season apricots while it is cooler today!

Hi Gary! I’ll just bet you’ll have lots to photograph with so much beautiful nature around you. I am still in Indianapolis, things changed so I’ll be here longer than planned. Apricots are one of my favorites, of course there’s nothing like tree ripened, they’re so delicious. You guys have had a busy summer this year. My sister and her husband decided to cut their garden by half, it’s gotten to be too much work for them. They’re doing a bunch of outside projects for their “park” in Worland, a new large pergola, fire pit and they have a low area of their yard so they’ve put in all new steps. My sister just canned some of her homemade pickle relish with her just picked cucumbers. It was great to hear from you, try to keep cool!

Honestly, I LOVE the bathtub holding buckets of flowers. You are in a harvesting season my friend and in true Gary form…you’re giving it all away. Just like God knew you would. 🧡

Bridget’s been experimenting with how to get her flowers to last longer. She’s been able to get the Lisianthus to last 12 days so far if picked early and stored first in a nice place…like a bathtub!…. I read a quote today that said something like “to serve God is to serve others.” (Henri Noewen sp?) I think that might be true, but not necessarily easy… I sure have been thinking about you and your communities with that terrible tragedy with rain and floods.

You know, Gary…I see you building a flower cooler for that sweetheart of a wife you have. I love that quote and I still believe what is given to us is multiplied by giving it away. (loaves and fishes) Thank you for thinking of me, but I’m not near a river, even though I did acquire one by my driveway. I think we used to call it a gully…until the rains came and then it became a river. Absolutely tragic what occurred with the real rivers. Much love to Bridget and you, my friend. 🧡🌻

thank you Barb. Summer is just moving by rather quickly out here. I guess it is partly because the place keeps me busy. I know that my mobility is going to make some of this work impossible someday, but for now it is ok. the flowers are still blossoming away, the grapes are sweet, the peaches are pretty, and juicy, the blackberries are still producing, the dogs and cats seem happy and Bridget is still creating mugs, bowls, vases, and platters with her hands in clay and 2100 degrees of heat!

Nice t-shirt and photo! 🙂 Glad to see your post, Gary. I’ve been thinking about you, wondering how the harvest has been going. I’ve heard the temps have been pretty hot lately. Glad you got away to sit by a cool mountain stream to rest a while. 🙏🏼

Been keeping busy outside, for sure. Just keeping the outdoor equipment running is a chore, but I do look out back and around with a sense of wonderment as things grow. I’ve picked over 5?gallons of blackberries so far and many pounds of pluots. My favorite peaches are just starting to ripen. I cooked down some satsuma plums and froze them for some Jammin’ later on. The arena garden did very well but have to figure out weed control next year. People seem to like coming over here and picking flowers and fruit. It has been hot but so far we’ve avoided that 110 degree plus heat. We did get over to Half Moon Bay for a few days. I think you would love that place, flowers galore!

Sounds a perfect place to sit Gary. And the sandwich sounds great (apart from the white bread bit) ! How great to be able to have the joy of growing your own produce to the extent you do and be able to find more joy in giving it away. The pottery is lovely too. Somethjng I woukd live to take up.
