Sitting here hoping it starts to rain. Been a long, hot summer.
The flower girl has been drying flowers for a wreath-making party. All about you’ll see flowers drying. These just got hung up in the barn this afternoon.

If it does rain, the pomegranates will probably split. They’re ripe, so we picked them today. Some of them are the largest pomegranates I have ever seen, larger than grapefruit!

Oh yeah, I heard Benny barking out back. Went out to get him and saw that he was upset with a coyote. The neighbor lost 21 lambs in the spring to the coyotes. Looks like this one returned to the scene of the crime. They always do. We have to be sure to always get our cats in before dark.
Harvest galore! I’m just a tad envious, ha. 😉 I bought my first pomegranate the other day for $3.99… so you are rich! 😀
Boy, that coyote can run, good thing Benny is on the job. 21 lambs is no joke, does the state or feds compensate for livestock loss? Hope your kitties are okay. 🤞🏼

It has been a great growing season and I am looking forward to a few jigsaw puzzles. The summer heat wears you down…, yeah, I was shocked at how large some of the pomegranates grew to be. I don’t spray them, so if they begin to crack, the itty bitty critters invade them. I picked them a bit earlier than normal, but they have good color and taste. I guess I have couple hundred dollars worth but after fed, social security, state taxes and accountant fees, I think I’ll just eat every last one myself. Can you die from eating too many pomegranates?… no $$$ for livestock losses due to predator kills. You know, out here the gray wolves have been reintroduced and they are causing havoc for the cattle ranchers up in the mountains. Also creating quite an issue between the ranchers and those who support the protection of the wolves. Honestly, between the bears, mountain lions, and wolves now, my head is on a swivel when up in the mountains fishing. The hunter becomes the hunted! I’ve ran into several bears over the years. Up in Lassen once when taking some college kids from the big city for a little hike, we ended up between a mother and her cubs. One of the students ran up to get a close up. Not a good move.

Yes, my son tells me that the ranches north of him only 20 miles away are experiencing wolf kills. Wonder what the pro-wolf folks will do when a kid gets taken? Apex predators are definitely a different deal.

Probably the same response as when a mountain lion kills somebody. Although rare, my grandson was stalked by one a couple years ago. Very scary.

Ugh, scary indeed. Tough to enjoy yourself hiking in the wild when you have cortisol levels up on red alert!

What a beautiful sight those flowers make awaiting to be turned into wreaths. Im glad there is a fence between Benny and the coyote, but Benny was on it. Pomegranates the size of grapefruit wow you are a super gardener, Gary.

Yes, I put that fence up to keep our dogs away from the neighbors dog. Kind of a demilitarized zone. Our property extends beyond it and our irrigation ditch was just on the other side where the coyote was running. The coyote didn’t seem to show much fear of Benny until he/she saw me…. Some of the pomegranates are huge this year. They don’t require as much water as other trees but this did get quite a bit. Walnuts are next and then the mandarins around the middle of November….Bridget is having a wreath making event in a couple of weeks. I’ll post some pics. The geese are migrating in!
